Bill: Euthanasia Oversight Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Country Labor Party
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: November 2159
Description[?]:
Euthanasia differs from suicide because it involves direct action from a doctor. Doctors are licensed by the government, which makes euthanasia a form of state-sanctioned killing. We feel that before euthanasia is performed by a state-licensed doctor, a neutral third-party should review the circumstances and ensure that euthanasia is justified. |
Proposals
Article 1

Old value:: Euthanasia is allowed with consent from the patient and the treating doctor.

Message | We disagree with this. If both the patient and the doctor agrees, and the patient is considered mentally stable, the court should have no say in this process. |

Message | "State has nothing to do with someone's life", like most sweeping generalities, is wrong. If a citizen wants to kill himself, that's his business. If he wants a doctor to kill him, then the government is involved, because doctors are licensed by the government. We see nothing wrong with having a neutral third party confirm the circumstances of the case, since after the fact it's too late to be sure that the patient was both mentally stable and wanted to die. |

Message | [OOC: The euthanasia rate in the Netherlands is many times higher than is officially reported, because doctors have been euthanizing infants and other people without their consent, based on the doctor's determination of potential "quality of life".] This proposal does not abolish euthanasia, but it does place it under the same type of oversight that police officers work with whenever a citizen dies at the hand of a representative of the state (either a doctor or a police officer). If the liberal parties of Mordusia are really so concerned about preventing possible abuse of authority, they would support this proposal. |

Message | What we in the SFM disagree with, is to a high degree the wording. It sets the judge up to be an authority over the patients life. If the proposal made clear that it is the duty of the court only to asses whether the patient is mentally stable, we would be in support. With this proposal, conservative judges can deny people the right to euthanisia based on their own set of beliefs. If the patient is mentally stable, and the doctor has done his work correctly, the court should only asses the mental state of the patient, and once it has been established that the patient is; A) Mentally stable, it is only up to the doctor and patient. B) Mentally unstable, euthanasia is not used. |

Random fact: Voters have an extra appreciation for bills that actually get passed, so if you want to maximally take profit from your votes, make sure you compromise with others. |
Random quote: "The first step in freeing yourself from social restrictions is the realization that there is no such thing as a 'safe' code of conduct, one that would earn everyone's approval. Your actions can always be condemned by someone, for being too bold or too apathetic, for being too conformist or too nonconformist, for being too liberal or too conservative. So it's necessary to decide whose approval is important to you." - Harry Browne |
