Bill: Democracy in Trade Unions
Details
Submitted by[?]: Revolutionary Socialist Party
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: May 3516
Description[?]:
The votes of those who vote should only count. For example under the current law if 80% of those who voted for industrial action but only 50% turned out to vote, then it would be counted as a No vote. Our democracy does not do that, people who don't vote have no say in a democracy, why should Trade Unions be any different. It is clearly an undemocratic law that seeks to undermine the ability of workers to get organised and fight against attacks on pay and conditiions. |

Message | It's fundamentally unfair to companies and consumers to allow a union to strike without popular support of its own membership. It also can allow a radical and organized minority within a union to hijack its command and act in ways directly adverse to the interests of the union as a whole. This is a ill thought-out law. Governor General Premrose |
Date | 04:28:01, July 15, 2013 CET | From | Revolutionary Socialist Party | To | Debating the Democracy in Trade Unions |
Message | It is the job of the union to organise its membership to vote on issues that affect its members. It is not the say of the companies or the government. By the logic of Mr. Premrose in our country it could be easily hijacked by a minority. Why should there be two different types of democracy, why should unions have restrictions but parliamentarians don't? Its quite clear this restriction is to limit the effectiveness of unions in fighting for better conditions and pay. Unions actions will be based on popular support. By this law it may or may not be. Like i said even if 80% of the membership on a vote that saw a turn out of 60% of its membership still wouldn't be enough!. Please tell me how that is democratic? This law is thought out, but we thank you for your concern. RSP Issued Statement. |
