Bill: 📜 OOC: Expanded Jelbic Dictionary (DO NOT DELETE)

Details

Submitted by[?]: Krt trzy Jeztri

Status[?]: debate

Votes: This bill is a resolution. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Description[?]:

A wiki version of this content (with other language content) is available here: http://particracy.wikia.com/wiki/Jelbic_Dictionary

Considering the revival of Jelbic nationalism, I think it proper that we should maintain a repository for new words as necessary. This will be updated regularly to allow the language's vocabulary to expand in a uniform manner.

The most up to date IdioC-approved vocabulary sheet can be found here: http://www.idioc.co.uk/Jelbic.txt All efforts in creating new words should use this existing sheet as the canonical final word on word creation. If a word already exists for what you're looking for, please use that instead of creating a new word!

A wiki article on Jelbek as a whole is available here: http://particracy.wikia.com/wiki/Jelbek
A wiki article on Jelbek grammar is available here: http://particracy.wikia.com/wiki/Old_High_Jelbic_Grammar/Tutorial

Nrlzi - adj. "Illuminated/clarified/brightened/enlightened." From nrljo (to illuminate/clarify/brighten).
Znmoad - n. "Revolution." From znmo (to oppose).

Given that the adjective znmoadé implied the existance of Znmoad, I created it. Since the intent with Znmoadé is "revolutionary," it makes more sense for Znmoad to be "revolution" rather than "oppose," making Znmoadé literally "revolution-ish."

MessageThinking through this, it might be worthwhile instead of my last changes to create a verb for "to revolt" that way Znmoad can mean "opposition" or something and we can make a new word string from revolt/revolution/revolutionary. Thoughts?

MessageLooking a bit more over the Jelbek, I decided that Spjogad is a better way to translate "alliance." Now it is derived from a verb, spjo, which can be derived from the Deltarian, rather than just derived directly from the Deltarian noun itself. To fit the morphology, Spjogad is better than the previous translation.

MessageThere are technically already words for horse (Fers) and God/Allah (Jezhrje'ko, shortened form of Jezhrjehiko), the latter of which I like, the latter I dislike. Since we want to tie the two in the Jelbek culture, I suggest a retcon of those words in favor of:

Jezhrjefrto - n. "God/Allah." From Jez (superior) + hrje (ultimate/final) + Frto (father).
Jezhrjebrnfi - n. "Horse." From Jez (superior) + hrje (ultimate/final) + Brnfi (brother).

This implies, I think, that a horse is next only to God in the Jelbek culture. I am only a little hesitant because would be the first retcon of IdioC's work that we've done, and I don't want to make a habit of that. I just really don't like Fers for horse.

MessageWhy hello there.

Dynastia called me in via the forum to have a look. Keep up the Deltarian-inspired direction and don't be hesitant to retcon (the original's 3.5 years old): the languages need to diverge and if a better word exists in the cultures, then transliterate it and use it. It'll sound more authentic for it.

Got a few suggestions based on the Old High Jelbic but it's up to you whether you take them. 3.5 years is about 850 in-game years, so in terms of the game world, taking suggestions from OHJ now would be like taking suggestions on the English language in 2150 from Chaucer.

-You could use "Hldjez" (Grand) as a prefix rather than "Jezhrje". "Hldjezkai" (Grand Man/He who is Grand) or "Hldjezknz" (Grand King) could be alternatives for Emperor or used as a royal style.

-"Fers" was an old suggestion for Horse, one of the first words and doesn't actually fit the usual formula (I just buggered up the German "Pferde" because it sounded consonantal). "Hrma" would fit better but probably doesn't sound as grand as you need.

-A lot of "kill/murder/genocide" words. The formula word would be "Krlmo" (cf. "Krjo", to die) but this wasn't ever stated, in fact, I just constructed it. A lot of the inspirations for the languages are quite metaphorical, so some more vivid words could work for these and summary punishments. Just get twisted with your metaphors:
--Kaié'katakmojad ("Sleep of a People")
--Herzmojylakhatajmo ("Forced work/labour", Herzmojylak- is the conjunctive form of "to force/compel")
--Nrlzifrjo ("Clearing Fire")

-For ancestor, "Jezetrunékfrto" would be better ("Great Backward Father", but chronologically speaking only, so "Great Forefather" literally). That way you don't have to say Allah is a "Most important dead father", which might not be taken so well!

-Formula word for street would be "stor" (and road "dorod"), but again, use the cultural influence you've taken for authenticity.

Keep it up!

-C
