Bill: Advertising Standards Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: Dranish Agrarian League

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: September 3559

Description[?]:

The recent NHSU scandal has only served to prove that some kind of board to monitor adverts and prohibit those that fail to follow basic rules on decency, ethics and accuracy are stopped from running. The Advertising Standards Board would be an independent body, appointed by Parliament and consisting of five to seven members.

MessageMr Speaker,

given that false information is already outlawed, this 'independent body', which the DHA would most likely fill with a bunch of uber-moralistic Hosian fundamentalists, would decide solely on matters of style. What a dull world it would be if only "decent, ethical and accurate", that is to say: bland, boring and lifeless billboards would fill our streets.

MessageMr Speaker,

The DHA does not have a majority in Parliament and probably never will like all parties. False information is banned in cases of slander, not advertising and I believe there is a distinction there. As for Ms, Davidson's opposition to decent, ethical and accurate adverts, I can only attribute to her occasional adventures with 'pot' as it makes no sense.

MessageMr Speaker,

I wonder how the Health Minister can declare that my statement makes no 'sense' because I oppose government-decreed morals. 'Sense' should be a rational category, but morals are never rational - they are subjective sentiments driven by personal preferences which should not be institutionalized as long as they are beyond the scope of protecting individual liberty.

As for my experiences with pot, these were far from 'occasional' - but a house filled with so many narrow-minded philistines is probably not the right place for elaborating on these stories, even if I would love to give inciting the holy furor of Boh or whatever is supposed to punish my sins a try. If I am not immediately struck down by a lightning right now we have acquired yet another empirical proof that 'Hosian' morals lack any foundation in natural law.

MessageMr Speaker,

Everyone here knows that this is not (mainly) about morals but more about misrepresentation and consumer protection. If for example, an energy drink advert claims that you will transform into a dragon upon drinking it, that's not really misrepresentation since it's clearly absurd. But if the drink claims that it has zero calories and clearly doesn't, then it's a misrepresentation.

MessageMr. Speaker,

I hope the Advertising Standards Board this Bill creates will stop Egelian products from being falsely advertised as "Dranish". They are not "Dranish" - they are Egelian.
