Message | Mr. Speaker, Lodamun is not an empire. In the last "royalist" era, it was a principality and its sovereign was a Prince. What would be the sense of having a directly-elected Emperor? What would be the sense of having any directly-elected office that only has ceremonial political powers? It is a waste of money to hold elections for an office that serves no purpose. We're paying an extra person to do nothing. We would have both an Emperor and a President, which makes no sense. This directly-elected head would also head the military, while having no other political powers, and there would be no guarantee that the military or government would support him. Why would he be head of the military when, for all we know, there is the large possibility of an uneducated populist fool winning elections? This will weaken the Presidium's grip on the head of state. Currently, with the President as head of state and head of government, the Presidium has more control of the executive. There was also no election arranged in conjunction with the bill, i.e. as a part of the bill to ensure that elections are held immediately after. If this bill passes, it will result in the Head of State being called "His Imperial Majesty, Emperor The President" - which would look silly and turn us into the joke of the world. -- Paul Fertig, Chairman of the NRG, Deputy Opposition Leader |
