Message | Herr Präsident, Abortion carries medical risks, and a wide range of more preferable options exist. Regardless of the life and choice debate, this extreme measure is dangerous to the health of women in this country and should not be passed. Message | Herr Präsident, I should remind Frau Meinhof, as one who has seen his wife go through it, that we know that giving birth is painful and stressful for women. But late-term abortions involve partial birth, and are thus only different in the sense that a purposely dead child is born instead of a live one. I need not remind the House that while birth is a natural process, abortion is not. It is a medical procedure, and even though we prefer alternatives like adoption to it, we can imagine cases where its use is justified, maybe even praiseworthy. But then evaluate it as the medical procedure it is, not as if it's as natural as giving birth would be. Weigh the possible risks ("do no harm", the Medical Oath requires), and we have to conclude that in the case of late-term abortions, they far outweigh the potential benefits, regardless of the whole right-to-life and right-to-choose debate. Random quote: "I worked at a factory owned by Germans, at coal pits owned by Frenchmen, and at a chemical plant owned by Belgians. There I discovered something about capitalists. They are all alike, whatever the nationality. All they wanted from me was the most work for the least money that kept me alive. So I became a communist." - Nikita Khrushchev |
