Message"There is more than one way of democratic appointment of mayors than just direct election. The current system allows the democratically eelcted local representatives to decide whether a "parliamentary system", where the mayor is elected by local council, is better suited to their locality, or whether the mayor is directly elected in a quasi-presidential system, or, thirdly, whether the democratically elected local council jointly exercises mayoral powers.

In all cases the people have the power to chose their representatives, i.e. their local councils.

We certainly will not support this bill which restricts the democratic pluralism for our democratically elected local councils."
