Bill: Fighting Against Hate Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: Religious Workers' Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: April 3618

Description[?]:

Hate speech that threatens or demeans a certain group, whether that group be religious, ethnic, economic, or otherwise, poses a real danger to that group's safety and well-being. We have seen in history that these hateful ideas can turn people against their neighbors and cause great strife. The only solution is stopping the spread of these messages at their source, promoting kindness to our fellow man.

MessageWe will oppose this bill. Censoring the speech of people does not equate to "promoting kindness to our fellow man." We like our current law as it prohibits that which needs to be prohibited, the intentional spreading of false information; however, we in the People's Progressive Party do not see cause or justification for this body to move to erode the freedom of speech the people of Alduria currently enjoy. We do not allow for the Freedom of Speech so that people can talk about the weather, but so that they may say very controversial things.

MessageYou would consider threats inciting violence towards a group, based solely on their identity, to be free speech? Hate speech is more than just "controversial" -- it is barbaric and dangerous and has no place in a society of equals.

MessageThreats of violent do not necessarily equate to acts of violence. Violent acts of aggression are already a crime, we need not move to tell people what they can and cannot say. You are proposing we go down a very dangerous path that will, little by little, erode away the civil liberties of the people of Alduria until their are none left. People need not ever give up liberty for security. We have made acts of violence a crime. We should continue to prosecute those who commit such crimes to the fullest extent of the law, but need not strip away the freedom of speech. We will continue to stand in opposition this proposal.

MessageWhile the rhetorical prowess of our Progressive associates is impressive, it is our belief that the sovereign rights of the individual do not extend so far as to permit the oppression or abuse of others. It does not comport with reason in our opinion to allow hateful groups or individuals to promote factionalism and division in Aldurian society in the name of free speech. To do so is a perversion of what stands behind our belief in free speech.

MessageI would disagree that is a perversion of what stands behind our belief in free speech. I would further ask in what way is it a perversion of what stands behind our belief in free speech. The very notion of free speech is to protect people who say things that are unpopular and controversial. To make it a crime to say things that we in this body agree is detestable, vile, vulgar, and by its very nature hateful still borderlines the tyrannical. As we said before, we have laws in place that punish violent acts of aggression. We believe that when people commit such acts we should prosecute them to the fullest extent of our laws, but why should we strip our citizens of the right to speak freely? The spoken word in and of itself is not a crime. If we make it so, then what happens next? Are the words not a mere extension of the thought? Will we next make hate thoughts illegal? Surely not! (I should certainly hope not I mean to say.) This is a very dangerous path for our nation to venture down, and I continue to stand in opposition to it.

MessageOur laws punish acts of aggression, but threats and hateful speech may lead to many such acts. Should the instigator of the not be punished as well? Certain minority groups have experienced decades of persecution as a result of ideas like these, and this is not something we should take lightly. Since we will likely be unable to influence the PPP's policy on the matter, we motion to commence voting.
