| Herr Präsident, Some say that we are judged by how we treat the least among us. Animals are living, sentient beings, and animal experimentation by its very nature takes a considerable toll on animal life. In most cases, suffering is inherent as animals are held in sterile, isolated cages, forced to suffer disease and injury, or slaughtered at the end of the study. In addition to the ethical question, animal studies do not reliably predict human outcomes. Obvious and subtle differences between humans and animals in terms of our anatomy and metabolism make it difficult to apply data derived from animal studies to human conditions. It simply doesn't work like that. It can therefore safely be assumed that the only reason this barbaric practice is allowed to continue is the wish of profiteers to keep the door open for all sorts of way to make profit.
