Bill: Equal Taxation Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: Bodhist Liberal Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: November 2167

Description[?]:

In recognition that a severe amount of hindsight is granted to those businesses that conceal themselves as houses of worship because of the religious beliefs that apparently sway the parties of this fantastic nation, Wantuni once again attempts to establish equality and accountability across the board.

Religious institutions are to be seen as businesses, in that all profit shall be taxed. Such a motive is less of a way to create more government income (in fact, that is hardly the point) and more of an attempt to assert that this nation is not one to pander to special interests and religious swaying.

Charitable donations shall remain an untaxed factor -- to even consider taxing donations would be wrong and corrupt. Weekly tithes, etc. are obviously charitable donations.

The taxation rate of profit shall reflect that of taxation of corporations and private business. Since that factor is zero at present, there should be no debate regarding whether these institutions that run themselves as businesses ought to be taxed. This Act is to simply put in strict terms that the law applies to everyone, with no exceptions.

The government feels that fairness and equality ought to be meant in totality. This bill is only an enforcement of such a policy.

MessageThere is no reason to oppose this bill. Honestly. Name a reason. The BLP is very interested in hearing "why".

(And yes, I did. I don't understand the opposition to the bill, either, and I think it ought to be pushed through.)

MessageWhy tax this institutions if you´re not taxing their charity donations wich probably is their largest income? It will be a dime in the Neil! Party´s who are for the individual and against the powerful state takeing advantage of the small man must oppose this.

MessageHow is it oppression of the "small man" to enact a policy that is consistent, fair, and completely reasonable?

The point is that houses of worship should not be exempt from taxation of profits. If they gain a profit through methods other than charitable donations, that profit ought to receive the same treatment under the law as a corporation's profit.

We must point out that profits from corporations are not taxed, and thus profits houses of worship gain will not be taxed. If however, at some point in the future, corporate taxes are increased (which we hope they aren't), then the churches will be forced to comply with the new tax as well.

It is not oppressive, it is not unfair. Quite the opposite. Any opposition to this bill is simply evidence of narrow-minded attempts to promote inequality in our nation.

MessageTaxes are unfair. Tax is theft.
This institutions give more to man than to the states tax chest. So why tax the little income they´ve.
Narrow-minded or not, we just don´t like taxes.

PS. And who said the world was an equal place?

MessageTax...is theft? It is theft to ask citizens to pay for their services? It is theft to require citizens to pay for their defense, security, education, and healthcare? That, my friends of the Conclave, is called responsibility.

The world is not an equal place, but it ought to be the mission of the parties in this nation to at least strive for something better. We believe that this bill is a path in that direction.

MessageWe oppose because churches are not for profit organizations. They do not seek revenue to disperse between owners/stock holders. We do not tax charitable institutions for this reason as well.

MessageI agree with the Federalists position.

The Royal Party's position is a bit odd. Even we recognize that services have to be paid for somehow, and this primarily comes from taxes. We believe that they should remain as low as possible so that they aren't a hinderance to economic development BUT that they should still exist so that government can provide services for the citizens it represents.
