MessageMr Speaker,

telephone lines nowadays are not a particularly costly or scarce good, so we are confident that the private sector can provide them at a price that guarantees quasi-universal access. For this reason, we consider price controls unnecessary as accompanying measures of privatization, especially since they provide a negative incentive for entrepreneurs to start a business in a time still marked by economic uncertainty.

MessageMr. Speaker,

This would be a step forward, but our ultimate goal should be free telephone calls for everyone. Communication is a basic necessity and should not be exploited by those who wish to make profit from everything they set their eyes on.

MessageMr. Speaker,

Whilst we support a private enterprise telecoms market, we insist there should be a price control regime, so as to prevent companies from exploiting local/regional monopoly power in order to exploit citizens for accessing what most of us would consider to be an essential service.
