Bill: ISP Freedom Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: Grand National Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: August 3841

Description[?]:

Mr Speaker,

operating a government-controlled ISP is an anachronism for a nation that strives to become a more liberal, democratic country. The current policy, which allows state internet to undercut market prices by imposing the costs on taxpayers without offering any features that private contenders could not also provide, is a dangerous one, for it is designed to drive private businesses out of the market and force customers to choose government ISPs where the state controls what may or may not be published. Privatization will lead to lower prices and more media pluralism, leading to a win-win situation for the taxpayer and civil society as a whole. As an additional measure, we propose to deregulate software source codes as a further boost to private enterprises.

MessageMr. Speaker,

We have some doubts about the move towards deregulating closed source software, but will vote for this Bill regardless because we are overwhelmingly in favour of getting the government out of the internet provider business. Time and time again, experience proves that government is not good at running businesses - especially businesses in the fast-moving technology sector.
