Bill: Economic Freedom of Speech Act, 3886

Details

Submitted by[?]: Borgerlig-Demokratiske Union

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: June 3887

Description[?]:

Mr Speaker,

a progressive nation like ours must trust its citizens to act as responsible consumers by questioning advertising techniques through critical thinking instead of having to rely on government censorship. Unrestricted advertising is also helpful for starting a conversation about many important issues without having to ask bureucrats whether the government approves of the campaign.

MessageWe favour this as well. Our only concern is with regards to alcohol and tobacco advertising, but since that is dealt with by seperate legislation, we will vote in favour of this bill.

MessageMr Speaker,

The government is proud to oppose this motion. The suggestion that the democratic control of advertising content by the people of Kazulia and their representatives in government is somehow an assault on freedom of speech is simply not a sensible conclusion. It is essential that the government retain the ability to ensure that advertising which is clearly contrary to the values of our society, for example advertising cynically directed at the young whose ability to make informed judgments is limited, is not allowed to pollute the airwaves.

MessageMr Speaker,

freedom of speech should not be subject to majoritarian decision-making. It is widely recognized as a universal right that doesn't need "democratic control" because it is considered a precondition for democracy to work. It is also disappointing to see Labour following authoritarian reflexes. The bigger question is: do we want to live in a pluralist society, where we deal with non-mainstream positions by sitting down and having an open conversation, or in a monolithic discoursive wasteland where everything that is considered incompatible with a state-decreed range of values is censored beforehand?

MessageMr Speaker,

Opposing this bill with the reasoning of free speech, is utterly ridiculous. AP is just being anti-free speech by defending regulation of advertisements. A free Kazulian citizen/corporation should be able to express their mind using media without any straps. By opposing, AP proved to be the successor of the obsolete Kazulian communism.

Random fact: Players have a responsibility to differentiate between OOC (out-of-character) and IC (in-character) behaviour, and to make clear when they are communicating in OOC or IC terms. Since Particracy is a role-playing game, IC excesses are generally fine, but OOC attacks are not. However, players must not presume this convention permits them to harass a player with IC remarks that have a clear OOC context.
