Submitted by[?]: Progressive Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

We seek to end this state-sponsored slavery within our nation's prisons. Even though these people have committed crimes, the main goal in prison is rehabilitation, not heavy punishment in the form of forced manual labor.

MessageThe rehabilitation is provided via education within prisons. This is a carrot and stick approach that appears to be working well, given our much lower than the Terran average reoffending rates.

MessageThe AAS previously pushed EXACTLY the legislation the CP is trying to push right now. We intend to support.

MessageResponse to the CP: We did. It got 'voted away'. What we have now is 'punishment'. There is no attempt to rehabilitate prisoners with marketable skills.

(It occurs to us that we have issued a previous release with CP instead of PP in our statement. We apologise for any confusion).

MessageConvicted criminals should not be earning a wage whilst in prison, one can only imagine that a) the taxpayer would no doubt be paying most if not all of this wage and b) if convicts have money surely it will be spent on illegal contraband within the prison?

MessageWe support. Economic incentives are very efficient, and this provides one more carrot to ensure good behavior while incarcerated.

MessagePeople are in prison due to contempt for the social niceties generally accepted throughout the communities. We fail to see why people should be not asked to repay a debt for a sin they have committed against society.
We cannot support.
