The Ministry of Health and Social Services, following a comprehensive study of hospital infections, proposes the following regulations to reduce the risk of infectious diseases (such as SARS) being spread among the patients and staff of hospitals.

1) All hospitals be required to form an Infection Control Committee, consisting of a representative from each department. This committee will have the authority to propose changes in operating procedure for all parts of the hospital as it pertains to infection control.

2) The penalties for failure to maintain clean operating rooms are to be substantially increased.

3) The Infection Control Committees of local hospitals are to have the authority to restrict, partially or entirely, visiting hours during cases of known or suspected infections.
