Message | We support the current policy because people who have the means to hire representation are responsible for their own defence, not tax payers. All defendants have the right to defend themselves if they choose not to pay for professionsl defense. In general, public defenders do not have much time to dedicate to any one case. If we passed this bill we would have to greatly increase the Justice Ministry Budget to hire an army of public defenders. Having to provide your own defense is deterrent for people not to commit crimes in the first place. |
