Old value:: There shall be a minimum wage at a level that a single full time worker on it can adequately subsist.
Current: There shall be a minimum wage at a level considered a "living wage," well above the poverty line for a full time worker.
Proposed: There shall be a minimum wage at a level that a full time worker on it can support a family of four without falling under the poverty line.

| Message | We think that a minimum wage should only support the worker. If he has to support a famility he should already have a job higher than minimum wage, and he would have to be a biit daft to have a familiy he can nit support. With current laws we reduce the children brought into poverty as only those who can support children wil have them. |

| Message | Also what about economic impact. If the minimum wage rises, all other jobs will need a wage rise to keep the wage relevent to skills, and expereinece. This will cause one of two things. 1. Prices of goods go up, so mimium wages, (and others) go up again to support the family of four. Causing prices to rise above the rate of inflation creating a recession,. Which we do not want. 2. Mass unemployment, as companies of all sorts lay-off people to keep profits up while keeping price of goods being offered the same. We do not want this so we ask every party including the SP, who need to think before they propose bills, to vote NO |

| Message | At the same time as our services are being cut and privatised, we have to work longer hours, in more casual jobs, often for less pay. The decimation of manufacturing industry has continued apace – an average of 400 jobs a day has been lost over the last two years alone. They are being replaced by lower-paid service jobs – for example, more than 400,000 people now work in call centres. But even these jobs are under threat as big business tries to lower wages by moving jobs abroad. Nonetheless, while there are still pockets of severe unemployment in Britain, at the moment, most working-class people can get work – but not work that pays us a living wage. Most of us get by only by relying on credit or, as it is otherwise known, debt. The ratio of household debt to pre-tax income now stands at 120%, its highest ever level. The Socialist Party stands in solidarity with all those workers fighting to defend or improve their pay and conditions. |
