MessageM. Speaker,

I don't really see the need for articles 1 or 2, and article 3 I completely disagree with. A four year term works well in Lodamun. The LPA will oppose this bill.

MessageMr Speaker.

I thank the Prime Minister for his considered response.

It is not a surprise that he opposes the shortening of his term in office. While we are always delighted to work with other parties we were realistic as to the likelihood that this would meet with his approval.

Perhaps he will allow me to explain the rationale for articles 1 and 2? These measures would enhance the level of debate in our country and allow opposition parties to raise issues important to their stakeholders. While the Prime Minister and I disagree on many issues surely we agree that democracy is important and that debate is healthy? I would note that this is a modest increase.

Could the Prime Minister be pursuaded to embrace the spirit of democracy and support articles 1 and 2 if we were to drop article 3?

MessageMr. Speaker

The four year term limit has numerous advantages, a primary one being that parties don't need to go from one election cycle to another and actually have time to get down to the business of governance. Such a term limit also saves the taxpayer money. The LSDP will not support this bill

MessageMr Speaker,

I note the comments from the LSDP regarding term lengths.

We will withdraw this article from the proposed bill. Will they support the other articles?

We are delighted that this proposal of ours has received such wide-spread cross-party support and seems set to pass. We look forward to bringing other such measures which can achieve consensus to parliament.
