Message | Mr. Speaker, I rise in strong support of this legislation. Perhaps you have heard the phrase "any job worth doing is worth doing well." For a conscript, this cliche is wholly innaccurate. In a conscript army no job is worth doing well, and, indeed, few jobs are done well. How often has anyone here done something well when they had objections to performing the task at all? Placing, basically, teenagers on the front lines in conflicts is a good way to secure massive amounts of casualties, but little else. Complacency, lack of discipline, and apathy inherent in a conscript army will lead to death and defeat, whereas the maintenance and funding of a strong, committed volunteer-recruit army will lead to victory. Furthermore, there is the moral argument against conscription. Is this not a nation in which liberty and freedom are two of our defining values? In defence of those liberties, is it justified to abandon them by forcing our youth into combat zones? I think not. Finally, our army is already strong. We have a chemical, biological, and nuclear arsenal at our disposal, and I have no doubt that, should our nation fall in danger, the men and women of the Cildanian Republic would fight for their freedom and their country. I yield. |
