| Mr. Speaker, The government's ability to bestow titles inevitably creates a climate that can encourage nepotism and corruption - or at least perceptions of nepotism and corruption. Whilst we would not want to ban anybody from calling themselves "Lord so-and-so" or "Duchess of such-and-such" etc., I see no reason for the government to be involved in bestowing these titles. Titles of nobility, regardless of the justification for granting them, create the perception that certain citizens are entitled to more privilege based solely on a government-granted title.
