Bill: Sales Tax Fairness Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: Simul Prorsum - Forward Together

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: July 4132

Description[?]:

Our government should be guided by the principle that taxes should only be imposed where people have the ability to pay. Currently, we tax essential items--food, and basic clothing--at 5%. Meanwhile, we only tax luxury items at 10%. We ask the poorest among us to pay almost as much for their bread as we do for the richest among us to furnish their villas.

Accordingly, Simul Prorsum proposes two changes to our tax code. First, we should join the overwhelming plurality of nations in abolishing the Food Tax. To make up for this decrease in revenue, Simul Prorsum also recommends raising the tax on luxury items slightly, to 12%. This will still keep Selucia's tax on luxury items quite low, by world-wide standards, but maintain the ability to fund essential services to build our country into the strongest position it can be.

MessageAs this tax bill has multiple parts, Simul Prorsum would like to encourage a debate on both parts, and to hear feedback from the government about whether or not this proposal would interfere with government funding. Our hope is that this bill can be tax neutral, and shift some of the burden of tax from the poor and middle class in Selucia.
