However, settlers from the Western nations arrived and colonised Dovani. The Holy Luthori Empire (analogous to Britain) took control of this region, despite the fact that most ordinary settlers were from Dundorf (analogous to Germany). The colonists named the new colonies Hulstria. Think of it as similar to British rule in Quebec. Eventually, the Dundorfian settlers launched a revolution against Luthori and achieved independence in 1650 as the Empire of Hulstria, a conservative monarchy largely continuing the institutions of the Holy Luthori Empire. ~A brief primer on in-game history~ The Empire of Hulstria was brought to an end in the 22nd century by the Great Dark Period, a century-long era of chaos and instability. However, after a brief experiment with Republicanism, Communism and other ideologies, a monarchist conservative hegemony was re-established - and "Greater Hulstria" would rule the nation for nearly a millennium. A system of Apartheid was implemented between Gao-Showans and Hulstrians, and though it was eventually abolished it created much resentment. However, inequalities and cultural tension left over from the era of Apartheid led to the rise of Gao-Showan nationalism. In 3386 this movement succeeded and established a binational Dual-Monarchy. Soon afterwards the new state of "Hulstria and Gao-Soto" was overthrown by the North Dovani Union, a totalitarian National Bolshevik regime. The North Dovani Union was overthrown by a peaceful revolution known as the September Revolution. The Dual-Monarchy was re-established, and successfully continued for centuries. This era, defined by a vibrant democratic life and peaceful-coexistence, is known as the Septembrist era. However, in those long centuries many deep cultural and social changes occurred. The increasing apathy of the democratic elements in nation life, as well as the increasing decline in the former royal houses, allowed the Sekowan House of Yukio-Labsburg to rally a fanatical following and usurp the thrones of Hulstria and Gao-Soto. Under the rule of the Yukio-Labsburgs many cultural changes that had been going on slowly and virtually unnoticed during the Septembrist period were acknowledged publicly and accelerated by a new cultural policy. A "Hulstro-Showan" identity was promoted officially, and Hulstro-Mikun was introduced as the official language in place of "proper" Dundorfian (German). Although the nation experienced a long period of republican democracy between 4017 and 4108, during which, for the first time in centuries, the native people became the dominant culture and ethnicity in Mikuni-Hulstria partly as a result of whites migrating to places such as Luthori and Dundorf, the Yukio-Labsburgs regained their power and their political system continues to this day. Ethnic Groups: Hulstro-Showans are the dominant ethnic group in Mikuni-Hulstria, and they are a mixed Hulstrian-Gao-Showa ethnicity. Colloquially known as "hāfu" or "halfies", Hulstro-Showans are characterized by the blend of the old Hulstrian and Kunihito cultures. Originally lower class Dundorfic settlers who were so far down the button of Hulstria's class system they ended up living alongside the Gao-Showan peasantry, these are people who have been intermarrying and living with Gao-Showans for so long that they ceased to be "mix-race" and became a community in their own right. They are the source of the Hulstro-Mikun language, which has traditionally been seen as vulgar slang or a inferior dialect. Traditionally proletarian and/or rural, the Hulstro-Showans have gradually come into the mainstream over the long centuries. Hulstro-Showans are based on Eurasians (mixed European-Asian ethnic groups) in culture and appearance, and more specifically a mix of Germans/Austrians and Japanese, and they speak Hulstro-Mikun (http://classic.particracy.net/viewbill.php?billid=427427). Gao-Showa is the name of a meta-ethnicity that includes a wide variety of ethnic and cultural groups, characterized by their use of Gao-Indralan (~ Sino-Tibetan & East Asian) languages and historical influence from the Empire of Gao-Soto (~ Imperial China & Medieval Japan). Collectively, the Gao-Showans are the largest cultural group in Dovani. In Mikuni-Hustria the Gao-Showa are represented primarily by the Kunihito, the "pure", "city-dweller" Gao-Showans, colloquially (and offensively) known as "Gishotoi". Formerly the secondary group in the dual-Monarchy, the Kunihito remain the dominant elite in the eastern half of the country and speak "proper" Kunikata (Japanese). The Kunihito are based on the Japanese in culture and appearance. A sub-group of the Kunihito, now considered a distinct category, is the Gisoten. Colloquially (and offensively) known as "bananas" ("yellow on the outside, white on the inside"), the Gisoten are fully Hulstrised Gao-Showans and converts to Hosianism (these two traits are, naturally, connected). The Gisoten speak Dundorfian (German) or are bilingual with Kunikata (Japanese) and/or Hulstro-Mikun (http://classic.particracy.net/viewbill.php?billid=427427) and represent Westernized Asians. There is also a small number of Sekowans, known as Mikuni-Sekowan in Mikuni-Hulstria. Also known as "North Sekowans" or "Sekowan émigrés", the Mikuni-Sekowans originally hail from the southern Gao-Showan nation of Sekowo. When Gao-Soto was reestablished at the beginning of the Dual-Monarchy, the original Kunihito aristocracy had long since gone extinct. Therefore, Sekowan noble families were invited north to serve as the restored Empire's new nobility. The most famous of these families are the Okatori Clan, who were made Emperors of Gao-Soto, and the House of Yukio-Labsburg who usurped them. Both the Yukio-Labsburgs and the Okatori have claims on the throne of Sekowo, both families having held the throne of Sekowo at some time in the past. They are based on Ryukyuans / Okinawans in culture and appearance and speak Kunikata (Japanese) and/or Hulstro-Mikun (http://classic.particracy.net/viewbill.php?billid=427427). Hulstrians were formerly the dominant ethnic group in the nation. Originating from the Dundorfian-speaking settlers under Luthorian colonial rule, the Hulstrians became the largest ethnicity in the nation and ruled it for millennia. Hulstrians are sometimes divided into sub-groups based on their social status, such as the Mittel-Hulstrians (the Hulstro-Mikun-speaking generally proletarian/middle class population in the West), Volk-Hulstrians (South African/Rhodesian-style settlers in the former colonies), Luthoro-Hulstrians (aristocratic blue bloods who are descended from the original Luthori colonial elite), and Reich-Hulstrians ("pure" Hulstrians descended from the leaders of the original war of independence). Hulstrians are based on German-speaking peoples in culture and appearance, but have a more creole-style culture due to their history, and speak Dundorfian (German) and/or Hulstro-Mikun (http://classic.particracy.net/viewbill.php?billid=427427). Religions: Currently most of the population of Mikuni-Hulstria is irreligious (including atheists, agnostics, deists, spiritual but not religious, etc.) as a result of dissatisfaction with traditional religions stemming from the collapse of the institutional structure of Tenshism during the democratic era. Previously a majority of the population adhered to Tenshism, officially the Imperial Evangelical Universal Church of the Orient, and sometimes known as the Imperial Cult. Tenshism is a syncretic mix of Hosianism, Kamism, and Daenism, characterized by henotheism, worship of Angels (considered identical to the Kami), reincarnation, and belief in the divine origin and authority of the monarch. Although Tenshism lost its dominant position during the 41st century democratic era, it has recently experienced a resurgence. Tenshism is primarily followed by Hulstro-Showans. Currently the largest religion, and the one that dominated the nation before the rise of Tenshism, is Hosianism. Hosianism is a religion founded in 1 CE which believes Eliyahu of Yishelem to be the Spirit of God and the Savior of mankind. The largest Hosian denomination in Mikuni-Hulstria, historically and at present, is Confessional Luthoranism, based on High Church Lutheranism, which used to be the state church during the Greater Hulstrian era. The Aurorian Patriarchal Church, Terra's largest Hosian communion, has a numerically small but historically significant presence in Mikuni-Hulstria. Most Hosians in Mikuni-Hulstria are Hulstrians and Gisoten. The Gao-Showa people have traditionally adhered to Kamism (Shinto), Daenism (Buddhism), and Jienism (Confucianism), often practiced in syncretism. Kamism is the name of the collection of native beliefs and mythology of the Kunihito people, devoted to the worship of a multitude of Kami (gods/spirits), considered a part of nature. Daenism is a religion that was born in Aldegar in the 2nd century CE and which later spread Terra-wide, becoming one of the largest Terran religions. Daenism emphasizes the elimination of attachment, aversion, and ignorance as the way to achieve enlightenment, meaning liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth. Jienism is an ethical and political philosophy founded in Gao-Soto in the 8th century, whose pervasive influence far outweighs the small number of declared Jienists. |

Random fact: Players who consent to a particular role-play by acknowledging it in their own role-play cannot then disown it or withdraw their consent from it. For example, if player A role-plays the assassination of player B's character, and player B then acknowledges the assassination in a news post, but then backtracks and insists the assassination did not happen, then he will be required under the rules to accept the validity of the assassination role-play. |
