Bill: Death Penalty Act of June 4205
Details
Submitted by[?]: New Triumph
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: February 4206
Description[?]:
New Triumph proposes that the death penalty be applied to most minor and all major criminal offences. Before the floor is opened for debate, we will address one question which will inevitably come up time and again: this measure is not barbaric, nor inhumane. It is essential that the death penalty acts as a deterrent to any would-be criminal, and to ensure that we are able to maintain the moral fabric of our nation, we must punish anyone who seeks to undermine us by committing a crime of any nature. In our opinion, there is no such thing as a 'minor crime': only crimes which people believe they can get away with. If we continue to allow people to believe they can get away with even petty crimes, then we are allowing the Holy Luthori Empire to become a morally bankrupt backwater state. |

Message | The death penalty should not apply to minor crimes. What if a person in poverty steals some bread, then really who is the blame the person or the government for allowing such a situation to occur. We agree with New Triumph on a lot of issues and see them as allies, but in this case they have gone a step too far. |

Message | Mr. Speaker, we respect the right of our friends to take a different view on this issue. With regards to the bread-stealing example, what we believe is that if we were governing this great nation, poverty would simply cease to exist in the same way that it currently does. Men on the streets would be offered a term of employment in the armed forces, and women and their children offered housing and, for adults, work somewhere in the civil service depending on their skill-set. Finally, I will re-iterate the point that we made earlier on: that we do not expect that the death penalty be used often, given that it would act as a deterrent. With a swathe of new opportunities for full-time employment and housing which would be offered under a New Triumph government we will be getting people off the streets and working only for the greater good of the state and also for the well-being of their families. - David Chapman, New Triumph party chairman |

Random fact: Did you know you can change the official name of your nation? All you need to do is draw up a new name that is in accordance with the Nation Renaming Guide, pass a bill proposing the name change with a two-thirds majority and then post a request to Moderation on the "Renaming Requests" thread. You can change city and region names in this way too. |
