Bill: Application of Reasonable Force
Details
Submitted by[?]: Fantastic Party
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: November 2061
Description[?]:
Outfitting our police force with military grade firearms is unnecessary, dangerous and expensive. The main goal of the police should be enforce law and maintain order; we feel this can be achieved with standard firearms rather than military-grade weaponry and that current legislation is presenting a drain on funds that could be better allocated to our armed forces or other, non-defence areas. We believe that there are important social and economic reasons for the use of sufficient rather than excessive force. |
Proposals
Article 1
Proposal[?] to change The weapons used by police forces.
Old value:: Police officers carry military-grade equipment.
Current: Police officers may only carry standard firearms apart from specially trained firearms units.
Proposed: Police officers carry standard firearms.

Message | NO! Our police must be able to protect themselves from dangerous criminals. It's so like you Liberals to put criminals first ahead of the safety of our people and law enforcers. |

Message | I am proposing nothing of the sort. Deadly force should only be used as a last resort in any policing situation. When it comes to maintaining the peace and enforcing the law in trained hands, standard firearms are as sufficient as any other. |

Message | The status quo allows our police to better protect our streets. We should not give criminals the chance to have better weapons than our own police. |

Message | The police operate with and have a responsibility to the public at large. Unlike the military the police must at all times consider the civilian cost of their actions. Outfitting our police force with military grade equipment is inappropriate considering their mandate. We must not allow the police to become a tool for urban warfare. In situations against heavily armed criminal forces appropriate military support could be requisitioned but on a daily basis the police must only use deadly force as a last resort and their provisions and training should support this. |

Message | There is nothing in their training now that mandates the standard use of deadly force. But we should equip our police officers with the best tools for the job, and those tools include the best weaponry that we can provide. We vote no on this reckless bill. |

Random fact: Players have a responsibility to differentiate between OOC (out-of-character) and IC (in-character) behaviour, and to make clear when they are communicating in OOC or IC terms. Since Particracy is a role-playing game, IC excesses are generally fine, but OOC attacks are not. However, players must not presume this convention permits them to harass a player with IC remarks that have a clear OOC context. |
