Bill: Right to Justice

Details

Submitted by[?]: Liberal Party for Equality

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: April 2062

Description[?]:

To make the justice system fair and impartial. those who are rich should not be able to buy better representation than that given to the poor by the state. Legal representation should be free to everybody. If finding the money to fund this is a worry, fines can be increased for those found guilty to pay for it.

MessageIt seems too expensive, like money that could be better spent elsewhere.

MessageI think that saving innocent people from being sent down because they are poor and the rich being able to buy freedom is just as important as most of the causes we spend on, and more important than, for example, paying for guns to arm police, or for the technology to produce plastic money. justice should be a priority.

MessageI think everyone too poor is already getting a free legal defense. If we make it free, then what incentive do lawyers have to put up a real defence? In fact it becomes totally useless to try and sue large corporations or the governmen, since the lawyer is already getting something. If you sue a corporation, there is a good chance that they will pay him illegaly to weaken the case. if you sue the govt well it will be like suing his employer...the government will have a lot more pull.

What keeps lawyers honest is the oppurtunity of a big fat fee..coming mainly from the corporate companies or govt in an award.

Messagewe could modify the system, in that case, to make it a compromise. Free representation is available to any who want it, but they can go privately if they want. This means that there is still an element of biass towards the rich, but at least people will be entitled to it, which would be a step forwards.

MessageThen that kills the People's Party argument. We'll still oppose, though, because it's expensive again and we don't have that much to spend.

MessageYou have to now propose budget numbers before getting anything to vote..
Let me help you on your way...12% of the population is below the poverty line, and we are giving free defence to them already. That it is a little over 5 million people. Even if 5% of those take part, thats 287,890 people at a $100,000 a case.

Thats atleast 28 billion dollars..enough to wipe out a little more than half our budget. Thats the level of out commitment already. Already there is almost no money for an army, healthcare or anything else. Are you sure that giving free legal defence to everyone who applies is so important that you would forgo all that?

MessageUgh, seeing this horribly irresponsible waste of OUR ENTIRE COUNTRY'S BUDGET makes us desire to quit the entire country.

The list of valuable causes is uncountable, and this is rather low on the list! It was bad enough before.

From a capitalist perspective: What keeps lawyer's going is the fat fees! This will make everyone's defense universally poor!

From a fascist perspective:
This will ruin our state's ability to fund it's military and police!

From a socialist perspective:
We won't be able to fund education or welfare anymore!

From an egalitarian perspective:
This will make public defense into a volunteer job, giving ALL the power to corporations and their large bankrolls.

From a communist perspective:
Well... okay, I'll admit. I don't know the communist take on this. I'm curious, but something tells me that a communist shouldn't be able to support it either.

And lastly, from my own perspective:
There will be NOTHING left to give to research or education. Our country will be stupid and will fall behind the rest of the world permanently!

MessageOOC: Whoa, weird how the capitalist and egalitarian perspectives lined up like that. That doesn't happen all the time.

Random fact: It usually takes up to an hour for election results to generate. During this time, the "Next Election" date is put forward a month, which is confusing. Do not worry! In a short time, the election result will generate and the "Next Election" date will then correct itself.
