Bill: Morality and Religion - Local Government Act 4226
Details
Submitted by[?]: Patriotic Party of Baltusia
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: January 4227
Description[?]:
Fellow members of Congress, Proposals like the Civil Liberties Bill of 4225 (http://classic.particracy.net/viewbill.php?billid=523948) show just how far some politicians are removed from what is going on in communities around the country, particularly those located some distance from this building. This kind of morally bankrupt law may well be acceptable in the confused melting pot that is our capital, but in the Hosian belt settlements of northern Lindar Valley, where I come from, this would have people reaching for the holy book in one hand and a shotgun in the other. No sir, we will not have it!! It demonstrates once again why laws on morality and religion should be devolved to the individual states so that people can have a say on the things that matter to them... right on their doorstep. So, here are range of proposals - not exhaustive - that our party's congresspeople in Lindar Valley and Gevaro wish to see implemented. God Bless Baltusia! Charlie Burleigh Congressman for Castella North, Lindar Valley Spokesperson for the Hosian Patriots |

Message | As a party of democrats, first and foremost, and a party of progressives, the BPP urge all members of the Congress to vote against this dinosaur Bill. Never mind the Morality and Religion Act of 4226, this is the Morality and Religion Act of 1226. Message | Mr Griffith, You have your opinion and you are obviously entitled to it. However, I would like to reflect on the following: *** holds up the BPP policy document*** In your Party Manifesto Overview you state, and I quote, "In voting on any bill, the BPP will uphold the belief that it should have the approbation of the Baltusian people". This bill has such approval, particularly in the states of Gevaro and Lindar Valley - where 180 Patriot Congressmen have been elected out of a total of 240 available, representing 2/3rds of the popular vote. So, Sir, I ask you: why are you not practising what you preach? Why do you stand in the way of self determination and try to prevent the local legislatures having the chance to vote on these issues - which is all we want? What happened to "the people's will is sovereign"? Charlie Burleigh Congressman for Castella North, Lindar Valley Spokesperson for the Hosian Patriots |

Message | Mr Burleigh, The logic used you use is ridiculous! Would you leave the issue of whether to allow beheading in the public marketplaces as a punishment for homosexuality up to local authorities 'so that people can have a say on the things that matter to them?' Message | And you counter argument is utterly flawed, Madame Attaway: we have national laws in place that do not allow capital punishment for crimes of any nature... even if your party deems homosexuality to be a crime, so the example is completely nonsensical and irrelevant. At the very most I could see on the spot fines being handed out for those who take the name of god in vain in public if it is deemed an offence in the same way anti social behaviour or vulgar language is clamped down on. Message | Honourable Member Burleigh, This vote epitomises as to why the BPP lobbied the Congress for 'One Man, One Vote' legislation - which your party decided to reject. However, following a balloting of the Party membership, the party has decided to vote against the Chief Whip and endorse this Act. Whilst we hope that the devolved institutions use their common sense when decided upon what extent to which they shall legalise/penalise proposals such as corporal punishment and blasphemy laws, we understand the importance of giving each region de-centralised power. We believe in a federal Baltusia, with regional voters needing a voice and theatre for local matters, rather than listening to the words of those who are disconnected from the grassroot voter. The Baltusia Parliamentary Party is for the many, not the few. Baltusia Parliamentary Party Chief Whips Office |

Message | I welcome the BPP's change of heart on this matter and thank the party's membership for recognising the unique nature of states like Gevaro and Lindar Valley and why they must have a bigger say on social issues such as these. Congressman Charlie Burleigh |

Message | Mr Burleigh, I would have thought it was fairly obvious that in my example I was using homosexuality as an example of something which should be just as legal as cross dressing or blasphemy and I find it insulting to say that I am in any way against gay rights. Furthermore I was obviously not suggesting that local authorities would choose to punish these things with death. I was merely showing how your logic was fundamentally flawed because it could be used to apply to the ridiculous situation I proposed. Furthermore the idea that people should be fined for insulting an imaginary sky-deity is ridiculous, if we are to do that then perhaps we should make it a crime to insult the head of state and turn our country into a one-party, authoritarian, fascist, theocracy, as a god is an essential part of our society to the extent that we will limit freedom of speech for him/her. The role of local governments should be to manage local issues, things such as discipline levels in schools which I support in this bill. The role of local government is not to impede upon the basic human rights of the citizens of Baltusia. Annika Attaway (SSPB spokesperson on moral affairs) |
