Message | Members of Congress, I think the key phrase here is "endanger national security". Do we really want to do that? Pascal Kindler Home Secretary |

Message | Members of Congress, Whilst the phrase "endanger national security" sound extremely important and official and the sort of thing that oughtn't be questioned, I would ask you one question, who decides if the information endangers national security? It has to be the intelligence services which gather the information in the first place. There is no way of knowing that the intelligence services are not withholding information for there own good (ie. if they have performed illegal operations at home or abroad and want to cover up), the only way to hold the intelligence community to account is to know what they're doing and the only way we can do that is by voting yes to this bill and showing said services they are not above the law. Message | Mr Belcher, What also isn't clear in this bill is what the set period of time is before files would be released. The current system allows non security risk files to be released after 30 years; a reasonable time frame. However, if we were to release files that, say, give details on battleship or tank designs or, speaking hypothetically now, intelligence gathered on a lifelong dictator in another country, they may still be "live" files in 30 years. So you can see the sort of situation we could find ourselves in. As for your concerns with the intelligence community, while I am Home Secretary and they come under my remit, I can assure you there is nothing to worry about. Pascal Kinder Home Secretary |
