Bill: Defence of the Nation Bill - 4232
Details
Submitted by[?]: Patriotic Party of Baltusia
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: November 4232
Description[?]:
Members of Congress, Give that this House has decided to vote against a key element of the Human Wave initiative - namely, to double the size of our armed forces through national service - and nuclear weapon development is not on the table right now, I believe we must look at other ways to boost security and defences. To this end I am looking to introduce a policy to issue military grade, semi-automatic weapons to our police, so they can act as a fully trained reserve force to the military, if and when needed, particularly if our country is invaded. Furthermore, we believe to offset a conventional aerial attack or - if the unspeakable happens - a nuclear attack, we should look to boost our civil defences, which are currently competent but do not provide full cover for our citizens. Message | Members of Congress, I would ask the Patriotic Party when they will give up the failing human wave experiment as it is clearly being rejected by the house. The role of the military is to protect and as we are not in conflict right now and nor is potential conflict on the horizon the need to bolster our military is non-existent. Message | Madame Hardy, I would recommend you read the recent Congressional archives. We accept that Human Wave has been rejected by this house and have proposed this bill as an alternative way of bolstering our forces. Let me be quite clear as to why I propose this: as defence secretary my role is to build a sufficiently sized military that can not only protect our national interests but also help secure peace around Terra, in conjunction with our allies on the Security Council. In addition, I need to equip us with a relevant conventional force to offset the need for a nuclear deterrent. This is not about being overly militaristic, political point scoring - or even to create a tighter grip on our own people - this is about ensuring our armed forces can fulfil their role and responsibilities within the world. Thank you Geoffrey Palmerston Defence Secretary |
