Bill: More Representation

Details

Submitted by[?]: Social Republican Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This bill asks for an amendement to the Constitution. It will require two-thirds of the legislature to vote in favor. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: January 2065

Description[?]:

This bill has one main part, that is, increasing the number of seats in the legislature to 336. This is one for each 100,000 people with sufferage. This will allow more accurate representation for our people.

Also, we wish to add the most accurate, population wise, method of determining seats per province, however, we feel that because that has met with failure before, it would condemn this proposal to fail regardless of its own merits.

MessageIWe wud be inclined to support a less bloated legislative, with an odd number of seats. 169, for example (half plus one of 336).

Messageanyway, that wouldn't make a difference because we have only had a 50-50 split once in our history, if it happens again maybe we should make it uneven. otherwise, nah.

also, why not simply double our parliamentary size, and increase in increments every few years? thoughts?

MessageThis is the amount of people with sufferage, divided by 100,000. But 168 is good too.

MessageWe will most likely vote against an increase in seats. Power should be shifted away from the Assembly, not toward. A small public to rep ratio leads to people depending more and more on the central government.

Messagegood point pp, the way this country is run we think it is best that people rely as little as possible on the central government which has some major delusions sometimes.

MessagePower should be shifted away from the Executive, hence towards the Assembly (and ideally even further, towards local communities). The more seats, the more accurately the people's views can be represented.

Messageunfortunately by growing the assembly we would be moving power away from local governments. People will be closer to their representative thus feel more inclined to lean on them for support.

We do not see the link between the power of the Executive and the size of the Assembly, in fact when the assembly gets larger it will take longer to come to a decision thus more choices would be left in the hands of the executive.

Random fact: Any RP law granting extraordinary "emergency powers" or dictator-like powers to a government must be passed by at least a 2/3rds majority, but (like all RP laws) may always be overturned by a simple majority vote of the legislature.
