MessageWe accept the opposition of our government partners and sadly coalition members occasionally have to disagree on certain matters. Are the PV and UDT in favour of increased trade with other nations or do they prefer the current protectionist trade policies that offer protection to Tukarali workers in some areas but naturally lead to increased prices for consumers in those same areas?

MessageTukarese industries, businesses and workers need more protections, not less. We oppose free trade. PV stands for fair trade.

MessageHow is food shipped in from abroad cheaper than food produced here in Tukarali?

MessageNot all foodstuffs will be cheaper, but some will be. It depends on whether or not we're a wealthy country or a poor country, but the whole idea of tariffs is to protect domestic products against cheaper imports, the logic of which is that the workers will have to spend more money on buying goods that could be potentially cheaper if imported from abroad. That is what protectionism and tariffs achieve.

MessageWhy will some imported foods be cheaper?

MessageSo the nature of economic production is that costs of labour, the extraction of raw materials, the manufacture process, packaging, transportation etc will vary from country to country producing varied finals costs of goods, such as food or high end product. In addition to this each nation will typically have a comparative advantage in certain goods, for example they might be lead oil producers, or produce the cheapest beef, or most grain etc etc.

Now unless you're going to argue that Tukarali has managed to produce the lowest cost of every single product imaginable as well as having a comparative advantage in very good imaginable, it is more than likely that many goods will be cheaper to import from abroad than to produce in this country.

The very nature of tariffs is that they are put in place to protect against cheaper foreign competition, for good reasons to protect domestic jobs and raise funds for government, but the knock on impact of this is that prices for certain products will be higher.

MessageExactly, you refer to labour costs and cheaper labour abroad means that workers are being exploited and we completely oppose that, regardless of where they are from.

We should give priority and protection to Tukarese goods and workers and we should not be exploiting people abroad either.

MessageWhat? Unless you're asserting that Tukarali is the wealthiest country in the world how can you suggest that everyone else has cheaper labour? Protectionism means more expensive food and goods, there is no way that Tukarali can produce everything for itself, we should focus on what we're good at and important goods from other nations to cover what we're not good at. Introducing tariffs simply hurts Tukarali consumers and props up unprofitable industries.
