Message | older We object to the proposition - not for chauvinistic, anti-liberal, but for rational technical reasons. There is no reason for making the concept of citizenship like being the member of a club. One person can be a member of several various clubs doing different things, the mc-club and the confectionary club etc all at the same time. But citizenship - if it is to mean anything but the mere symbolism - should mean that you are liable to pay the taxes and have a right to the benefits of your country, and being held accountable to its laws. Should a double citizenship mean that the holder would be obliged to pay income tax to both states? No, no-one would accept and choose that. Then we are left with citizenship being a mere symbolic (chauvinistic!) badge. We find it unnecessary to complicate our beauraucracy with keeping track of such "fan-club" diplomas. Let citizenship be a technical matter, not an emotional one. |

Message | People with multiple citizenship would pay taxes to the country of their residence. Yes, this is usually so, so presently there is no direct problem there. But it is still important to use good solid general principles. There might be other duties that clash, such as military service. More typical problems arise on the side of benefits. It might promote exploitation of multiple systems of social security. And when it comes to law, you might say that people will and shall be judged according to the laws where they were seized and convicted. Yes, but there are cases that become international, diplomatic cases. It is best to keep the lines clear regarding which jurisdiction a person ultimately belongs to. A citizen of Kazulia should always know that he may appeal to be extradited and judged according to Kazulian law if he is arrested in another country. If a person can collect several citizenships it gives him an unfair advantage, being able to commit a crime somewhere and then go for a pick of which country he wants to be judged by. -Thomas Ottosen (Kj) |

Random fact: Cabinet ministers who disagree seriously with the head of government would usually be expected to resign. Parties within the cabinet may attempt to manoeuvre to replace the head of government though, for example by proposing a new cabinet bill or voting for an early election. |
