| Sultan Karamanli, Leader of LP: "Mr Speaker, already I know that this proposal will unleash strong criticism and strong opposition, however, as a party which try to offer a pragmatic and resonable policy, we cannot but contrast the populisms which often led the decisions on this matter. Let's look to the reality, the continue decrease in the sale tax on ordinary goods is one of the causes of our current deficit. We are a developed nation, with the highest incomes among the world and with relatively small poverty being one of the major powers of Terra. For this reason, we are sure that asking to our citizens to pay among 3% and 5% of sale tax on ordinary goods will not affect excessively their revenues, especially thinking to the fact that the previous Bellinguer Government re-introduced a lot of public services which can make save more money, especially to the lowest incomes, than this increase of the sale tax, an increase, we remember, of just 3/5% on the total. With such a measure our deficit problems will be heavily reduced and the state will be able to reduce the charges deriving from the payment of interest due to the deficit, with general benefits for all the nation. As said, we already expect from most part of the collegues strong criticism, but we would like invite you to reflect about the everage price of ordinary and essential goods and an increase of just 5%. Paying something 100 today, tomorrow we will pay it 105 LIS. Is it really a such draconian increase taking in mind that since the last term the State public services can make save a lot of money, as said, especially for the lowest income? With this proposal we will propose 5%, however, we are open to the debate for future adjustement or cooperation. Thank you" |

| Message | Mr. Speaker, We think that VAT should be raised, yet within government we didnt reach any compremise. We hope Minister of Finance could work with LP and our party on this matter. Thus so far, we shall abstain. |
