Message | Elmo Cappola, ULD Deputy Chairperson The lower the salaries of the MPs, the higher the average age of the politicians in it. We as the ULD do give members of our structures large salaries, after all, we have side companies run by the party which, yes, is a revolutionary tactic of making the party independent of any external funding, as well as of gathering very large sums of money independently, which also gives us our funding, but enough of my boasting about it. Other parties do not reward their members financially, and often, as we, partially, rely on their funds. That is not something bad, but in a situation where the MPs don't earn much, many specialists won't enter politics as they could earn more elsewhere, and politicians themselves will likely prefer to pursue local politics, as the financial gains and influence there are just larger. And we cannot pretend like that isn't important for some, maybe most politicians. We will vote for this bill because we are afraid that it will either result in the age of average MPs rising significantly, as currently, we are one of the youngest parliaments, because older politicians will have savings, and they will care less about influence, but they will bring way less innovation and relatability to the chambers, or that it will cause corruption, as some MPs may wish to get a little on the side, and as such be potent to corruption. Or both. We also believe that a higher pay makes the position seem more prestigious, and we believe that it should seem as such, which may drive the ambition of the people to join us as politicians. |

Message | Mr. Speaker, We are AGAINST this proposal. Now politicians have no incentive to accept bribes. If we pay peanuts, we get monkey's! |

Message | Giorgia Ciriello, Whip of AR: "Mr Speaker, we have to agree with the collegues of PRI: the current salary was proposed by ULD and supported also by AR because we think that the salary you propose could push the politicians to accept bribes. If they have all the expenses payed by the state, we are sure that the MPs are less attracted by bribes temptations. Furthermore, they are the representatives of the nation and the ones on whose hands rely the fate of the nation, they have the right to have a treatment adeguate to the importance of their mission. Thank you" |
