Bill: Progressive Taxation Bill
Details
Submitted by[?]: Segue Democratic Alliance
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: January 2199
Description[?]:
We propose eliminating sales tax on non-luxury items as we believe such taxes to be inherently regressive, affecting most those who can least afford to pay. We would increase sales taxes on luxury items to pay for this measure. |

Message | This is a tax increase on the population. I would only support this bill if the luxury tax was increased only by the amount that the tax on essential goods is decreased, ie; 2%. |

Message | The maths of this measure are slightly uncertain in the absense of economic data for the country, however the proportion of GNP accounted for by essential goods is probably larger than that accounted for by luxuries, as everyone buys essentials in more or less equal measure, but not everyone buys so many luxuries. Therefore I would suggest that this Bill leaves the tax burden more or less unchanged, but shifts that burden to those who can better afford it. |
