Bill: RP - Open Debate over Joining the Majatran Alliance and Common Economic Area

Details

Votes: This bill is a resolution. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: March 4399

Description[?]:

Mr Speaker,

During my first few months as Minister of Foreign Affairs one topic has cropped up more than most in diplomatic circles: Will Vanuku join the Majatran Alliance and Common Economic Area.

(OOC: Treaty Here - http://classic.particracy.net/viewtreaty.php?treatyid=3760 more info here: http://particracy.wikia.com/wiki/Majatran_Alliance)

It is clear that for the 11 current members, that Vanukean involvement in the alliance would be beneficial economically and from a security point of view. But is it beneficial to Vanuku?

Given that there are differing views on this, even within the three Grand Council parties, I wish to hold an open debate to garner opinions before deciding whether Vanuku should go down this path or even forge closer unilateral ties with other nations on this continent.

One thing to mention is that we are already in a bi-lateral free trade and economic co-operation treaty with Istalia, who are the largest trading nation in the Alliance, so this may have a bearing too (http://classic.particracy.net/viewtreaty.php?treatyid=3986).

I now open this topic up for debate.

MessageMr. Speaker,

The GNP is in doubt. I have spoken to the leadership of the party and nobody seems to have a very strong opinion for and against. We trade with all these nations regardless and we have a special treaty with Istalia. We are the most powerful military force on this planet, so do we really need an alliance like this?

Personally I am all for stronger economical ties, even military ties, as long as we do not get ourselves tied down in treaties in a way that we limit the open and honest way that Vanuku has engaged in international diplomacy these past decades. We must remain the bastion of sovereignty and self-determination!

MessageMr Speaker,

I concur with the Duchess Anzlék regarding our position as the strongest military power on Terra, which leads me to believe currently we do not need this Union for our security.

The only thing that concerns me to some extent is the growing power of the Northern Council - led by Kazulia and Dorvik. Currently, there is no need for alarm given our relatively good relations but if this should change a Majatran Union, dominated by Vanuku in alliance with Istalia, would be an excellent deterrent to large-scale conflict.

MessageMr. Speaker,

The asssessment of the Minister is correct, we are technically in an alliance with Kazulia as far as I know, if nothing has changed. Yet the GNP shares the sentiment that we must be weary of the Kazulians, perhaps it is preferable to align ourselves with the Majatran Union and Alliance.

Has the Minister of Foreign Affairs contacted the Istalians what they think on our potential inclusion?

MessageMr Speaker,

I can confirm I have spoken with the Istalian Ambassador and am currently waiting a formal response from Istalian Foreign Minister Simone Calenda.

I will report back with Istalia's thoughts on the matter.

MessageMr Speaker,

I have now spoken to the Istalian Foreign Minister who is very enthusiastic about the possibility of Vanuku joining the Majatran Union. The Istalians consider our inclusion would help both our nations and the continent grow in all areas and promote peace, prosperity and development.

They talk of a rekindling of the Pax Temerkai-Votta and creating an even more prominent place on the world stage for Majatra, the cradle of civilisation. A very positive response illustrating, once again, Vanuku's worth to other nations!

I'll leave this debate open for a little while longer for any more comments - then will move it to a vote to see if, in principal, we should push ahead with closer ties with the Union.

MessageMr. Speaker,

The GNP recognized the Pax Temrkai-Votta, something that ended decades, if not centuries, of conflict on Majatra with a single swoop. It was King Temrkai's crowning achievement and we believe in its power.

The GNP therefore states they would prefer the Majatran Union over the Northern Council.

MessageMr Speaker,

I shall now move this to vote. Please vote 'Yes' to pursue closer links with the Majatran Union; or 'No' to remain as we are.

Please note, this is not a vote to join the Union or to sign up to the official treaty but simply the first step along that path - a declaration of interest, you may say. As such a normal majority vote of the Grand Council is required to pass this resolution.
