| Mutanabbian Law on Slavery Senators, It is utterly odd that we have to argue this in front of the Senate, but slavery is wrong. It is a form of arbitrary domination, the very opposite of freedom, it destroys Republican liberty, and it harms the low income earners due to unfair competition between them and the unfree labor provided in our prisons. We cannot condemn the practice of slavery in other nations, as we have done towards Saridan, while we ourselves continue to practice unfree labor. The Senate has, unfortunately rejected our proposal to reform the prison system so that most offenders would be allowed to avoid incarceration, perhaps out of some misguided desire to appear "tough on crime". But that does not mean that, by continuing to incarcerate criminals, that gives us the right to enslave them. It is high time to abolish penal servitude, and instead allow prisons to cooperate with businesses in providing voluntary and paid employment to inmates. That way they will acquire useful job skills and will be provided a productive and social activity they can engage in. Given that the vast majority of inmates are released after a period of time, it is imperative that the overall economy not suffer because of some politicians' distorted sense of justice.
