MessageThe aim of this act is to use excess labour to boost our economy while also improving the standing of living of vast sectors of the poor via National Service employment, developing the education and skill base of our population while simultaneously improving infrastructure and industry.

National Service is not employment, and it just increases the already large sum that we spend on defence.

MessageI think the ULDs assertion that people paid to do a job aren't employed reenforces the idiocy of their party and of our present government. Such servicemen would serve as civilians and work on infastructure and investment projects in local communities. I would be very interested to hear what the liberal democrats think being employed even is? As for defence spending, wouldn't it be far better for everyone involved if the investment in defence went towards economic and infrastructural development rather than simply to buy tanks to rust in the countryside?

Employment, in a liberal, capitalist democracy like ours, is always voluntary.

MessageLuciano Vespa-Baldassare, PND Vice Leader,

We have several issues concerning national service in times of peace. Firstly, we are taking away potentially valuable workforce from the market. Secondly, said workforce becomes an inefficient and unmotivated burden on the tax payer. In the day and age when boots on the ground are less required than ever before thanks to drones and other unmanned military devices, it is crucial that our professional military is as the name implies: professional. Which includes commitment and desire for the noble cause of protecting the homeland.

Messageooc: did anyone read the bill in question. It is a civilian national service. This is not conscription. The people on the national service program aren't trained to fight, they carry out community work and infrastructure development.

MessageEmployment? Voluntary? To be frank, don't be daft your excellency. People don't have a choice of working and never have done, unless the dole is a choice worth taking. People need to work, that has always been the case, indeed the market relies on a steady supply of labour and a reserve army of unemployed people in order to function effectively. Wages are determined by the supply and demand of labour, supply which must be maintained in order to decrease wage levels and maintain an effective profit margin. It is a shame that those who proclaim themselves economists on the right live in such a fantasy land. Another demonstration of how out of touch the ULD is with the electorate, let alone with reality.

The ULD understands the people, that is why we were dominating the Istalian political scene of the last century. The people want a strong, capitalist economy that we peovide them; they want to be able to develop their small, family businesses with ease and safety.
And tes, people must work; that is the most natural thing in our spciety: if you want to be a part of it, you must have input in the form of employment. Being employed is, however, a choice; you may not work, however the state will not provide you with any funds if you aren't actively seeking to change that state of things. That is fair.
However, people also choose where to work; this will make it impossible. You will make it harder for young people to gain experience because of taking their time on whatever this is.
And, may I tell you; lower supply means higher wages. This will increase the field of workforce qualified to do specific jobs; they will do them. Which will, in return, make their wages lower.
