Message | In a modern democracy, such as Kalistan's, the legislature needs to contain a membership of a proportionate number. There are many reasons for this. The NLA in particular believes that the cost of politics in this country must be reduced to be cost efficient for the taxpayer, and the members of the National Assembly should be the best in their respective fields in civil society, well attached to their constituents. For this reason, the New Liberal Alliance proposed to the Socialist-led government a bill to reduce the membership of the National Assembly from 750 to 501. We believe 501 is the best number to fulfill these aims, while being an odd number to prevent political deadlock. Zandra Arnold Leader of the New Liberal Alliance |

Message | Actually, why make it 501? Why not make it 10? If the goal is to select the best of the best, rather than opening the assembly to as wide a variety of society as possible, lets go all the way down to 10 Deputies. They will of course all be Socialists: As a matter of fact, the fewer the deputies, the less granular the voice of the people. But the result of the election will be the same: the Assembly will be 100% Socialist. Perhaps it is time for the Socialist Party to simply declare Kalistan a 1 Party state and reduce the number of proposals that may be made, to perpetuate socialist rule in Kalistan permanently. We thank the NLA for giving us this great idea. If we are going to limit the representation of the people by reducing the assembly, we should simply forego the pretense of popular democracy all together. What does the NLA think of this? Message | Firstly, we are pleased by the willingness of the Socialist government to hold debate time and votes on proposals made by extra-parliamentary opposition. However, on this issue, we see no reason to use any more of the National Assembly's time. Although we thank Premier al-Khali for his comments, the suggestions to reduce the Assembly to 10 members or do away with parliamentary democracy altogether are unhelpful. New Liberal proposals to reduce the Assembly by a third are based on a balance between cost effectiveness and meritocracy, and ensuring there are enough representatives for our people. The Socialists argue diversity and tradition, although 501 members will be fully diverse due to proportional representation, and we wish to keep the traditions of a smaller Assembly intact. We request that the National Assembly move this proposal to a vote. Zandra Arnold Leader of the New Liberal Alliance. |

Message | Comrade: We are a nation of almost 100 million people, and have a 2500 year history of parliamentary democracy. In all that time, we have never had trouble finding 750 people with enough time and intelligence to provide Kalistan with capable, if not always good government. We respectfully will oppose this proposal and ask indulgence for our sarcastic response. It seems that the proposal to reduce the size of the legislature is asinine and is made far to often. At least the NLA has attempted to provide a decent justification for that which differs from the standard "We want to make the Assembly MORE democratic by making it LESS representative." We yield. |
