Bill: Police Reform Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Ám'ádíakai Spjogad
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: December 4493
Description[?]:
At present, Vanuku's police force is too militarised. What we need is a specialised, professional civil police force which focuses on civil policing. Public order needs to be upheld, but at the same time, the police need to deploy the right tactics, and civil liberties need to be better respected. Message | Members of the Grand Council, We agree there needs to be a refining of the role of our police and how they interact with the public. We can, therefore, agree with much of this bill particularly the areas of respecting civil liberty and how the police conduct their duties. The only articles we cannot support at this time are the articles relating to weapons used by police forces and the separation of the police and the military. Firstly on ongoing security grounds and also for economic reasons: a large quantity of small arms weaponry has been commissioned recently and this would leave the manufacturer severely out of pocket at this time. However, as the security concerns continue to subside and when it comes to the time for the weapons to be replaced, we could look at these options again. Message | Members of the Grand Council, We are disappointed the governing party are not able to support those two important parts of this bill, although we are pleased they are willing to support the rest, so in the spirit of co-operation, we have removed the two Articles which were in dispute, in the hope of getting the rest of the bill passed.
