Description[?]:
I've been trying to work with some new graphics software, so I thought of doing an atlas of the Selucian Empire. Pretty simple, right? Five detailed maps, one of each imperial province, that ought to do the trick. Anyway, I started out with the basic Particracy outline of the Selucian Empire, then I magnified it by 2300%, a good size to view each province individually upon any modern or semi-modern monitor. Then I hand-traced the coastlines and provincial borders and added the major cities as they appear on the map featured in the Imperial Wiki (http://80.237.164.51/particracy/wiki/index.php/Selucian_Empire). Right now, the entirety of our beloved empire is on one (huge) file, but the plan is to eventually split it up into smaller files, each corresponding to a single province. I've uploaded the big map to my ISP for your viewing and critical pleasure here: http://dogfist.home.bresnan.net/Empire/Big_Map_Tentative.png Please note that this is merely in its beginning stages. So far, all I have here are the major cities, the major highways, a few national parks, one small town (Velka Kurva, East Shadar), and one minor highway. This is where you all come in. I need place names. With our population density, there needs to be a multitude of small cities and towns all over the place and they all need names. Bring them on! The national parks also need names. Well, let the ideas flow and let's get ourselves an awesome atlas. What do you say? |

Message | Well, I really appreciate the idea, good work Maybe a small remark: Selucia has the highest population density in Terra, wich means pretty much every single place has a house on it. (I think I can say this, I live in the region with the highest population density on eath) I say our national parks therefor aren't really dominating the landscape. Some city/town names: Lebbeka, Derremon, Ghando, Brosso, Livain, Broggo |

Message | Thanks for the names, and you have a good point about the national parks. I suspect the parks will shrink as more towns are added... |

Message | Well, I've tweaked the map a bit, added some towns to West Shadar and Uleroth, put rivers on Uleroth, and shrunk down the national parks a bit. Still a ways to go though. More input please? Thanks again, VBS. http://dogfist.home.bresnan.net/Empire/Big_Map_Tentative.png |

Message | Oh yeah, if anyone has a place name that MUST be in a certain geographic location, let me know, I'll put it there. |

Message | Well, I've dreaded doing Korgana with its 302.92 people per square kilometer (the next densest province is Uleroth with 239.34 people per sq. K), but I've begun. The areas around Auroria and Assedo are crammed with suburbs, and most of the parties here might be pleased with the commemorative names of those around Auroria. I also added in the Trans-Selucian Highway, and I congratulate whoever came up with the idea on the amazing engineering feat it must have been to build those bridges! Now, if other parties don't throw down place names for this soon, I shall be forced to put a Lebbeka in every province until it becomes synonomous with "Springfield." |

Message | Yeah VBS, I thought your towns should be in West Shadar, because that's where your party was born. Frank Dewinter must be fond of his roots, growing up on the beach and surrounded by the natural beauty and all. West Shadar also happens to be the least populated of all the provinces (13,332,812 or 133.86 people per sq. km). (I research these things carefully) |

Message | True there... I've pretty much finished Korgana, the hard part is over. If anybody has more names for me, I would appreciate it. http://dogfist.home.bresnan.net/Empire/Big_Map_Tentative.png |

Message | Great map !! It looks awsome, ... tending to brilliant ! What kind of program do you use? And may we use this tool also for a strategic map of the Empire's military bases etc (as a seperate map?) |

Message | I used all open-source programs on Linux for these, though I'm sure it's all available on Windows (for free) as well. So here goes: First, I took a screenshot of the Selucian Empire from the world map. Then with GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) to scale the image by 2300% and saved it as a PNG. Next I opened it with Inkscape (an SVG vector graphics editor) and this is where the creativity began. I hand-traced all the islands and the borders. a bitmap line magnified to 2300% really leaves quite a bit of leeway when you're tracing it with a much thinner line. Now that I got each island in there as a white object, and inserted a big blue rectangle behind them, I added the cities, rivers, NPs, roads, etc. so that each name and each town and all that is a separate object. I sampled most of the colors from MapQuest, by the way... For viewing on the web, I simply export it to PNG format and upload. Once done, I'm going to chop up the image into individual provinces and give each one a page in the Wiki for anyone who feels like motoring around the Empire. I also uploaded the SVG, which can be found here: http://dogfist.home.bresnan.net/Empire/Coastal_Outlines.svg I intend to upload newer versions of both the png and the svg as I work on it some more. The SVG can easily have features added or subtracted, since each feature is a separate object, so yes, it could be used for a strategic (or any other sort of specialized) map as well. |

Message | Right! I've just finished Uleroth and Kal Serathi now has a bunch of nameless cities. I put much of the population of Kal Serathi in the south between Kallara and Kabbasa, and then along the Korgana border, making the North Coast a pretty nice place to live. It kind of reminds me of where I live, except that it has a lower altitude, a coastline, and a tropical climate (I live about 2000 M above sea level with an alpine/desert climate). Also implemented highway numbering with the Imperator's Highways. Odd numbers run mainly east-west and even numbers run mainly north-south. This should explain why I-10 all of the sudden becomes I-55. Also, I hope the governments of Ontario and Quebec don't take me to court for ripping off their signs. I DID change the colors afterall... http://dogfist.home.bresnan.net/Empire/Big_Map_Tentative.png http://dogfist.home.bresnan.net/Empire/Coastal_Outlines.svg (hit refresh in your browser after opening the PNG if you don't see any numbered highways) |

Message | I just found out that if you have Adobe Illustrator, you can read/edit SVGs (it's a pretty universal format, but Mozilla and Opera browsers don't like it) |

Message | Finished Kal Serathi, Named all but one of the national parks, put airports everywhere but Shadar Island. (I saved Shadar for last due to lower population density, I figured it would be easier that way...) |

Message | ooc- This one's in the voting stage for the sake of posterity. Vote yes, no, abstain, I don't care. It won't affect your standings either way. I just want it in that scrapbook we call the "legislative history," that's all. |
