Description[?]:

Speaker,

A government, sufficiently democratic, is by the people, for the people. That has long been hold as an absolute truth. Yet, as I stand here as an representative for the people it can’t help to think of how, if a government is for the people all to often the will of a few, even and individual is allow to triumph the will and the best of the people.

Speaker, the bill tabled by the United Labour Front seeks to present a remedy to that problem. Today we often see problem in allocating land for building schools, hospitals and other public building. We even find that our defence is hindered, yes even stopped by private land owner. Now if a private citizen would tangle our defence that would be treason, Speaker. But as it stands it is not treason if that tanglement is done by private property. But I ask myself; how is it that the right to property is held above that of national defence, or that of right of treatment at a hospital?

Speaker we have proposed a bill that would allow the use of eminent domain, that is compulsory acquisition of land deemed necessary for the state to use. The use shall be restricted to necessary investment related to the people’s wellbeing or that of national defence. It also set a regulation protecting small farms and house owner ensuring that the acquisition of land only effects those who owns larger properties or land and not in a meaningful way use it in relation to public or personal needs. Furthermore, we propose a system wherein the government, from what can be considered a proper sum, reimburse the affected person or company.

If this bill passes, it is a clear signal to the people that now their need comes first. It is a forceful statement that we do not think that unused plots, shacks without inhabitants or open swats of land that fills no need other than be fixed capital for the rich is more important than the need and safety of the people.

Selma Steinsdottir,
Leader of the United Labour Front

Labour's argument regarding eminent domain reeks of hypocrisy. In their proposed "The fair and equal act" they admonished those Telamoners amongst us who create jobs, who contribute to science, who make art, who build infrastructure and public works as not really patriots but instead as exploiters. Instead, we are to believe, the only true heroes are those who work everyday. Are these both not Telamoners?

Here, they propose that private property - the very staple of society - can and should be taken from those who rightfully own it; but only if it is for some government project such as defense. Does this not also apply to coal reserves, or iron deposits for the steel needed for the defense industries? Or how about non-defense items such as airports, or beachfront developments?

And just whom do they think this eminent domain will effect the most? Those "unpatriotic" movers and shakers that Labour so despises or the "hero" everyman? Most certainly the latter more than the former! How many regular Telamoners will be cast out of their homes, how many of their neighborhoods destroyed, or their lakeside vacation cabins ground up so city governments can create retention ponds on someone's home.

For shame! Keeping eminent domain illegal will protect ALL citizens of Telamon, whether they be rich, famous, notorious, or somewhere in between.

MessageSpeaker,

When the liberal says that it is private property that is the staple of our society they have shown their true colours in a slip of a tongue. It is solidarity and hard work that is! And the opposition to this bill, as shown by the Liberals, is very much and opposition to the fact that hard work should pay off in form good healthcare, good schools, a society. And it is opposition to solidarity when they say that we should not use unused land for our national heath system or our national defence – because apparently if you own land you don’t have to contribute!

Speaker I state again that the intention of this bill is to make sure that unused land and plots of property, which is better used for the common good, is not left to whiter away. We propose a fair system of reimbursement and as well a system where only the unused land and properties of the riches percent of this country is used. That is fair, and equal speaker!

MessageSpeaker,

Ah, Labour wishes to destroy private property and the rights of those who own it. Let it be known that Labour wishes to take your house away! If Selma Steinsdottir and Labour are elected: your house? Gone. Your farm? Gone. Your shed? Gone. Your bakery? Gone. Your union hall? Gone. All of these are private property that Labour will allow governments to take away for whatever arbitrary reason they so choose. The icing on the cake is that the very same governments that can arbitrary steal your property are also the ones who will have the power to determine your compensation! I often wonder if the homeowner will feel that they have been fairly treated.

*sigh* Enough with this government overreach. Labour needs to understand that the country needs reasonable laws that respect rights and not an all-powerful, authoritarian government. Enough is enough. We must vote this bill down!
