Bill: Workers Freedom Bill

Details

Submitted by[?]: Alorian National Progress Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: December 2210

Description[?]:

Democracy in the Labour Movement is of the utmost importance to the ANPP, it is for this reason we call for for the repeal of legislation requiring trade unions to hold a ballot before striking. This law allows government, bosses and trade union leaders to bureaucratically prevent workers from taking immediate steps to defend their rights such as wildcat strikes. Although apparently democratic in intention this law limits the freedom of workers to defend their class and as such in anti-democratic.

MessageOh good, so the Trade Unions can drag unwilling workers around to do what they want. No.

MessageThat is not a situation we wish to see and ANPP activists who are members of unions are at the forefront of those fighting to make sure unions are accountable to their members, this law however makes unions less democratic not more as it limits the capacity of workers on the shopfloor to act and potentially puts power in the hands of collaborationist union leaderships who can control the timing and terms of ballots in such a way as to prevent grassroots activism being effective. The issue is not whether unions should be democratic but whether government has the right to force them to have a ballot every time they strike for it to be legal.

MessageWe belive in Democratic Socailism, which mean voting before going to strike, so we shall abstain.

MessageSurely as a democratic socialist you are not in favour of the state dictating when workers can and cannot strike? Read the debate.

MessageAs a laissez-faire party, we find "Trade Unions are not required by law to hold a ballot before striking" a reducing of gov't economic restrictions.

Random fact: Cultural Protocol bills must provide a real-life equivalent or short description for the ethnic groups, languages and religions contained in them, such that it would be easy for an unfamiliar player to understand (e.g. "Dundorfian = German"). Where appropriate, they should also provide guidance to players on where to find help with translations and character names. This might include, for example, links to Google Translate, Behind the Name's Random Name Generator and Fantasy Name Generators.
