Legislation to clarify the government's position with regard to the inherent dignity of life under God. MessageThe government recognises the valid concerns that the opposition have with regard to the proliferation of pornography. On this basis, we will be bringing separate legislation to deal with this problem but we cannot support the other provisions brought forward in this legislation.

MessageHonourable Minister Chontoglou,

We are pleased to hear that the government will be supporting measures to restrict and criminalize pornography, a medium predicated on exploitation, the existence of which only serves to perpetuate violence against women in our society. We look forward to working with the government in this regard.

With this being said, the Minister is still unclear on why the government prefers to preserve and protect sex trafficking. Further, we would appreciate answers from the government on their decision to provide adult sexual aids to our young people in all public toilets and pharmacies.

Birlik is united in our Ahmadi values which reject the exploitation of women, whether in brothels or in pornographic films. We wish to build a society where young men and women aren't inundated with sexual messaging and products from the media and the government. A society where sex traffickers and brothel operators aren't in business with the encouragement of government, but rather, are dealt with as the criminals they are.

While the government has expressed a willingness to evolve on issues of women's liberation, for which we are grateful, we would like to know what kind of society they are working toward. Is it a society informed by our culture and our Faith, or a soulless liberal state dependent on its conformity to international norms?

Grateful for your good co-operation,

Aziz Gunes
General-Secretary
Birlik

MessageThe government thanks General-Secretary Gunes for his response. Our decision to support the legalisation of prostitution should not be misunderstood to mean that we support the evils of sex trafficking, sexual exploitation and sexual slavery. All of these are things the government will continue to prosecute with the full force of the law. Our view, however, is that the criminalisation of prostitution would only further damage those vulnerable women who are being exploited.

The subsidisation of contraception is a policy that is motivated primarily by a desire to protect the sexual health of the country as well as to empower women to take control of their sexual lives. In this sense, it helps prevent the spread of sexually-transmitted infections and we view this as a crucial part of improving the general state of the nation's health and wellbeing.

Our government is committed to building a country whose character is informed by the fundamental values that unite all Ahmadis (as well as those of other faiths): community, compassion and justice. Our belief is that the legislation we are defending here reflects and promotes those values. So-called "international norms" do not concern us in issues of domestic politics and will certainly never take precedent over our principles.
