Bill: Defence Industry Bill 4748

Details

Submitted by[?]: Alliance Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: November 4748

Description[?]:

The Alliance suspects that some parties - with perfectly respectable support from a proportion of the electorate - would prefer the defence industry to be publicly owned, and the Alliance has some sympathy for that point of view.

However, the current operation appears to work well, so there is no intention to fix what is not broken.

This Bill does propose, though, that there is scope to consider subsidising this highly important sector.
With additional funding, the defence industry can develop ever more efficient kit, equipment and weaponry.
With more "bangs for our bucks" this in turn could actually lead to a justified decrease in the overall defence budget - possibly as quickly as during the next parliamentary session.

MessageWe do not agree that subsidising any particular industry is in the taxpayers interest. The Government should be funding our own military more so. The only money to exchange hand with the private industry is in time when we need to purchase equipment from said companies itself. If you were to increase military spending instead, with certain difference in regulation; we might consider supporting that instead.

Random fact: It usually takes up to an hour for election results to generate. During this time, the "Next Election" date is put forward a month, which is confusing. Do not worry! In a short time, the election result will generate and the "Next Election" date will then correct itself.
