Message | Mr Speaker, We are enacting a wide reform of schools. First of all, we are removing the socialism from schools; children should not be forced to sing the national anthem in school, as if we live in some dictatorship, nor should they receive an education telling them how great the government is. That is for them to decide. We are also stopping the subsidation of university fees. This is because what subsidised university means is that people who have never had a chance to go to university are paying for strangers to go there. Is that fair? No. We are also allowing selective schools. We think these are a good way of allowing smart pupils who can't pay for private schools to be allowed to go to a school where their abilities will be recognised. However, we don't think their curriculum should be that much different from comprehensive schools, otherwise children there will feel like they are second class students. So we will let selective schools open, but must continue to treat all students with fairness. - Alun Iowerth MP PC, Minister for Education and Culture |
