Bill: Education Act: Article 7. Religious Education

Details

Submitted by[?]: We Say So! Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: July 2220

Description[?]:

Whilst accepting that freedom of religious belief is not part of the Government remit, and whilst accepting that a belief in a divine entity through any religious belief is, within itself, not a cause for concern, the Government will, for all future educational needs, no longer allow the setting up or operation of religion based scholastic institutions.

Current legislation allows religions to set up scholastic institutions, however they are not regulated in any way to guarantee educational standards or what is being taught to pupils. This can lead to the enforcment of a belief structure on young children who have no say over what they are being taught.
The current allowance of religious schools increases the risk of religious intolerance as seperate religious institutions are capable of "hiding" their followers away and teaching them a position against other religions, and other non-religious groups, through the educational structures within those religious institutions.

Religious Education will continue to be taught in schools, compulsory until age 14 and through course selection afterward, and religious groups may also still meet to discuss and educate their followers through other means.
