| Message | Minimum wages do not result in higher incomes for workers in unskilled jobs at the low end of the pay scale. They result, instead, in both of the following negative phenomena, which slow the nation's economy and harm the nation's competitive advantage: 1) They result in price increases in goods produced using low-income labor. Employers do not pay increases in production expenses that result, consumers pay for them. The higher prices result in reduced demand for those goods, and, since fewer supply resources are required to meet the lower demand, fewer workers are required, and layoffs result. Those whom the minimum wage seeks to give a raise in wages, instead see the wages they do have disappear. 2) Also, imported goods, produced using lower-cost labor in foreign countries, become more attractive to our consumers than our own domestically produced goods. This adds further to the attrition of Zardugali jobs. The flip side of that trade balance coin is that our own goods becom less competitive in foreign markets, resulting in even fewer minimum wage jobs. This is a recipe for disaster, and the creation of a underclass of unskilled nonworkers living solely off public assistance, which we do not provide. It denies persons lacking employable skills the few options they do have to provide a livelihood for themselves and their families. | Message | (sorry for the double post) It is thus my assertion that what is in place is more than meeting the spirit and intent of this bill and then some. There is no need to even work full time to adequately subsist, and this bill would either increase the cost of living nationwide by around 25% or reduce full time wages, and in either event would increase the subsistance level only to full-time workers.. Neither is condusive to subsisting, nor to the economic freedom and bounty we enjoy. I thus cannot reccomend or endorse this bill in any form or fashion, however noble the intent may be. |
