| While it may seem viscerally appropriate to impose reciprocal tariffs on imports from countries which themselves have tariffs, the reality is that all tariffs are economically harmful to us, irrespective of whether the other country has tariffs of their own. When we make imports artificially expensive we restrict the ability of our citizens to purchase cheap foreign goods. By eliminating tariffs we enable people to direct their resources in the most efficient way. Citizens can buy cheaper foreign goods (leaving them with more money in their pockets to spend on domestic goods). We enable our industries to produce more cheaply by sourcing their raw materials from the lowest cost source, which increases our aggregate production and thereby our national wealth. |

| Message | why do you expect people that buy foreign to buy domestic products with the remain money? Also, in some cases, some protectionist measures have been found usefull to allow domestic industries to reach a status in wich they are more able to compete with foreign companies. All that im saying is that i would like to ear more, if you would be so kind. |

Because some things are essentially local by necessity: cleaning, restaurants, notaries etc. Other things will be more desirable domestically because they will be the things that our own industry is better at than other countries. "some protectionist measures have been found usefull to allow domestic industries to reach a status in wich they are more able to compete with foreign companies." Yes. FOR THOSE INDUSTRIES. Of course the recipients of the handouts find them useful. Of course the industries who are spared competition from more efficient foreign producers like those tariffs. However, every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Every dollar you give an inefficient producer has to be taken from an efficient producer, or a consumer. Looking at tariffs, why do we NEED to develop our inefficient industries so that they one day reach the level of foreign producers today? We can already obtain those goods from efficient producers elsewhere. We might as well spend our efforts doing things that we are good at and letting the foreign experts continue doing what they are good at. Specialisation is a good thing. |
