Bill: Republic Referendum

Details

Submitted by[?]: VS

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This bill is a resolution. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: October 5202

Description[?]:

Our party are opponents of the monarchy as an outdated feudal institution that cannot exist in a society that tries to guarantee equal rights for all. We have more than the two thirds majority neccessary to make constitution changes but also have a respect for the emotional tie large parts of the people have to the monarchy. Therefore, rather than abolishing the monarchy immidietly we call for a referendum to let the people decide. This referendum will be held at the same time as the next election.

(OOC: The result will depend on party vote share, if my party remains in two-thirds majority or does so with other republican parties we will propose such a reform after the next election. If we do not have a republican two-thirds majority it will count as a majority of the population having voted for the monarchy to remain and we will respect this.)

MessageOOC: Also if the LKA-player have put in too much work in the monarchy to feel good about this we can come up with an alternative solution, I don't want to ruin the fun for anyone.

MessageWe believe that the constitutional monarchy has served its purpose well, and has proven a point of unity for our nation. It has the advantage of removing the function of head of state, and the vital but limited, ceremonial functions it carries out, from party politics while not limiting democratic control of government. Therefore, while we respect republican opinion, believe it is polarizing and unwise to seek to change the constitutional framework of our country.

MessageWe do, however, applaud the socialists for allowing a popular vote on the issue rather than to proceed with immediate abolition.

MessageWe, as well as the FFP, support the retention of the constitutional monarchy. The Royal Family has reigned as a symbol of unity between the once conflicting Kivonian and Davostani peoples and is beloved by all the people. And while we respect those who support the republican system, we believe that the damage that would be done by the abolition of the monarchy would be unfathomable.
(OOC: I also want to respect VS’ ideas, so how about a debate and referendum on whether to transition to a republic or to preserve the constitutional monarchy after the results of the elections in 4 years?)
