Voting deadline: November 5404

Description[?]:

Mr Speaker,

A little over 15 years ago the then Prime Minister, Mr Wilfred Moore tabled a motion to significantly bolster our armed forces funding and size, both increased in the aftermath under Mr Moores government and under its successor the People’s Party’s Wendy Rodger’s’ government. However, sadly this expansion greatly slowed and has in recent years began to decline once more, under the current coalition government.

As per the agreement which is legally binding as it had passed through the house all governments must commit to maintaining the level of personnel and funding laid out in the agreement. The current government falls short of those numbers and is therefore violating a legally binding agreement.

And if the Labor party say they did not agree with the motion, the Labor party at the time abstained so the agreement still stands.

We urge the current Minister of Defence to rectify the wrong, resume the expansion of our armed forces and increase funding once again, so that our nation has the defensive capabilities we so desperately require.

Marcus Farran,
Deputy Leader of the Opposition,
Shadow Minister for Defence
